Digital SLR cameras are quite affordable these days, allowing travelers to take professional quality pictures. Don't over do it with equipment, however, because traveling

Magazines like National Geographic have inspired people to travel and photograph for decades. Seeing beautiful full page prints of exotic islands or wonderfully clad foreign people groups sets the adventurer's heart racing. People dream of seeing the world and going to places others haven't experienced. When adventurers get the chance to break free and travel, a camera is usually at the top of their pack-list. This article breaks down a few essential travel photography tips

Memory Cards and Storage

Digital photographers should always have extra memory cards. Memory cards are cheap these days and photographers can never have too many. If going for a long trip, photographers should consider purchasing a netbook computer. These miniature computers are great for travel photography because they offer most of the features of a notebook computer in an even smaller package.

Travel photographers can back up their pictures, do some editing and even check their email on the go. For those who can't afford a netbook, many internet cafes offer back up to cd or dvd services. However, be aware that many internet cafe computers have viruses, so it may be risky connecting a memory card to them.

What to Bring

Travelers should consider bringing a point-and-shoot compact camera even if they have a DSLR. There are times when having a more compact camera will be an advantage. Point-and-shoot cameras are easy to fit in a pocket and won't draw unwanted attention as easily.

A good camera bag that is comfortable and can hold all the necessary lenses and accessories will come in handy. For travelers going to areas with a theft problem, consider getting a sturdy bag lined with steel mesh. Photographers should never leave their bag unattended and for extra precaution they should loop an arm or leg through the shoulder strap when the bag is lying next to them.

Travel Photography Tips

There is a temptation for photographers to shoot first and look later. Consider enjoying the scene first and choosing with care the scene to photograph. If a person is the subject of the photograph consider the cultural implications of taking their photograph and ask first before snapping their portrait. Many people will be very willing to have their picture taken, but those who aren't should be respected.

Photographers often attract a lot of attention with all their gear and large flashy cameras. Taking only the necessary gear on a trip will help photographers reduce weight and blend in better with their surroundings. If a photographer needs to carry a lot of expensive photography equipment they should consider getting some sort of travel insurance for their equipment.

As much fun as travel photography is, travelers should remember to relax, enjoy their surroundings and have a great trip.
