With the myriad of applications available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, photographers can find some useful tools to suit their needs.

There are plenty of iPhone photography apps for the built-in iPhone camera, but what about apps for photographers? Weeding through all the iPhone camera apps looking for true photography apps can be difficult. There are, however, some useful iPhone and iPod Touch tools for photographers.

Photography Basics

Besides learning the basics of photography, new camera owners should study their camera manuals. IPhone and iPod Touch users can save weight by reading their manual on their mobile device. There are paid apps available for this, but why pay when it should be free? Simply download the manual as a pdf from the camera manufacturer's website. Next download one of the many free document readers available from the iTunes app store. Files lite works well and has a 200 MB storage limit.

Nikon has an excellent free photography guide called Learn & Explore. Canon and other users are in luck, too, since the app mostly covers general photography. Learn & Explore has a glossary of terms, for looking up specifics about cameras, as well as some great articles called “Insights & Techniques”. Professional photographers have contributed their knowledge and photographs to 25 articles covering “Fundamentals of Photography”, “Shooting Techniques” and “Image Editing”.

Photography Tools

Depth of field and hyperfocal distance are complicated areas of photography, but luckily there are some apps to make things easier. There are many apps to help photographers calculate depth of field, some of which are free. Field Tools is an example of a simple but very useful free app for calculating depth of field and hyperfocal distances. Check out the DoFMaster website to learn more on how to use these calculations.

Photography is all about light and photographers are always looking for the best light in which to shoot. The early morning hours just after sunrise and the time before sunset are often ideal for photography. With a simple iPhone or iPod Touch app, photographers can know when the sun rises and sets on any given day in any given city. Once again there are plenty of apps available to give this info, but most are paid apps. One free app that doesn't require GPS or a wifi connection is City Time Lite. It not only allows users to check sunrise and sunset, but it also gives information on moon phases which can be useful for night photography.

With these iPhone and iPod Touch apps and tools, photographers can save time and weight.
